American NGO complacency in Honduras

I am finding more and more everyday I speak a language to the outside world that is forgotten...
Or ignored...
~ Tomas

~

I believe American NGO's in Honduras need to set a path that leads to revolutionary vision but has short-term steps to renovate, innovate, and make money for NGO's...
This money can fund Campesino projects...
And allow talented people to stay in-country...

This post is a challenge to American NGO's in Honduras...
As one American NGO told me they recently experienced “A wake up call”...
Another said "We all know changes are needed"...

Christians like to use our Lord as an excuse to hide behind...
I am constantly told in Honduras by Christians...
“It will happen on our Lords time… Not yours Tomas.”
I am so very tired of hearing this excuse...
We as stewards of mankind...
It is our responsibility to find solutions...
Jesus Christ is not going to drop from the sky and employ Honduran families...

Sharing Christ with Hondurans is one step of the process...
Not the end all solution...
Hondurans can not eat a Bible…
Because of lack of jobs in Honduras…
Hondurans migrate to the United States…

Following Christian beliefs...
Apparently our Lord is sending Hondurans North to find ways to feed their family...

Meanwhile...
Honduran families suffer greatly for lack of a parent(s)…
Youth find "family" in gangs...
Broken families breeds drug abuse…
I recently visited a Honduran alcohol/drug rehab clinic…
Drug patients outnumbered alcohol patients 2:1…

Yet...
American NGO medical brigades are still “in”…
American NGO medical clinics are easy to run…
A safe soapbox to preach from…
The thousands of dollars spent for Americans to travel to Honduras can be better spent building facilities to employ Hondurans...

For those who say American run clinics are needed on every street corner in Honduras...
My three children were not born in American clinics in Honduras...
Angelica and Tomasito were born at Hospital San Francisco in Juticalpa, Olancho, Honduras...
A Honduran government run public hospital...
'Cause the hospital does not allow family members to sleep overnight Diego was born in a private clinic in Julticalpa, Olancho, Honduras called Troche...
Close by Hospital San Francisco...
Our Honduran doctor is Silvia Hernandez...
My precious children were brought into this world by Honduran hands...
When I was gunshot five times I recovered at Hospital San Francisco...
Cared for my Honduran hands...
Therefore there is a medical infrastructure in Honduras provided by the Honduran government...

Christian tourists replace the plastic hut that once housed a Honduran family of six...
Water faucets are turned on...
Bibles are read…
Each year plaques are given out to American financial donors…
I have never seen a plaque given to a Campesino…
Christian tourist testimonies related to a Honduran adventure are read back home...
In the end...
Donors pledge more money…
The Christian conscious is pleased…
The secret lie of "helping Honduras" continues without contest...
Hondurans remain jobless…
The exodus North continues unabated...

Honduran born NGO directors cry about the incredible sacrifices they make...
"Staying behind to help the poor"...
Receive another plaque...
These same directors fly free to the USA...
Stay for months at a time...
Educate their children stateside...
Meanwhile Campesinos are denied American visas’…

Honduras is no longer poor in the sense of the word...
Because of the lack of action by any NGO...
Or government...
Honduans have left Honduras to look for ways to support their families...
Illegal Honduran Campesinos make up a large portion of the American workforce…
Western Union is now the number one cash crop in Honduras...
As a result Western Union has replaced the need for many Hondurans to work for money...
Essentially Honduras has stopped developing...
Hundreds of thousands of acres of land have been abandoned...
Long term consequences are there are few Hondurans willing to maintain their countries infrastructure...
This is another migration issue that is not being addressed...

This role is being played out throughout Central America...

I relate the words of Mexican billionare magnate Don Carlos Slim to American donors/NGO’s in Honduras…

"If they're inefficient or don't get real-term returns, they're not going to be running anything"
"Our concept is more to accomplish and solve things, rather than giving — that is, not going around like Santa Claus."
"Poverty isn't solved with donations."
~ Carlos Slim

Amen Don Carlos...

What if Christ our Lord…
Were standing before American NGO’s today…
And said…
“No more Christian sustainable famine projects…
I will give you only one chance to truly make a difference in Honduras…
And you have to do it within three years…
Or you are out of Honduras...”

What if American Christian NGO’s truly feared the wrath of G-d…

American humanitarian complacency in Honduras must stop…

"The Bible says:
And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
~ Proverbs 1:32

Dictionary:
Complacency - Self satisfaction accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies...

Complacency and passivity are man killers in our culture. We need to consciously overcome these sappers of strength and be the men G-d has envisioned us to be...

G-d says...

And it shall come to pass at that time
That I will search Jerusalem with lamps,
And punish the men of complacency,
Who say in their heart,
The Lord will not do good,
Nor will He do evil.
~ Zephaniah 1:12 NKJV

Notice that G-d says he will 'punish the men.'
Not women and not children, but the men. He holds us accountable as leaders of our homes and communities.
The last three lines of the passage sum up many Christians' belief that G-d will not take action either for or against them because of their passivity. Many people are lulled into complacency by the belief that G-d is apathetic and we will face no accountability for our inaction.
This is precisely why we don't hesitate to break our marriage vows: we don't fear the wrath of G-d anymore."
~ Rick Johnson - Better Dads, Stronger
